I’m excited to share that I’ve launched Insight STEM, a tutoring service for middle school, high school, and university students in math, science, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science.
Why I started this
I’ve been tutoring informally for as long as I can remember — friends, family, whoever needed help before an exam. Back in university, I TA’d CMPT 295 (Introduction to Computer Systems) at SFU, and it confirmed something I already suspected: I like teaching, and I’m good at it. Since then I’ve spent my career as a Senior Software Engineer, working on backend systems, APIs, and enterprise data pipelines. At some point I realized I wanted to bring those two things together again — not as a side thing I do for people who happen to ask, but as something real.
What it is
Insight STEM covers middle school and high school STEM subjects, plus first-year university math and undergrad-level computer science. Sessions are mostly 1:1, though I also run small group sessions, and I offer both online and in-person tutoring around Metro Vancouver.
Why “Insight”
The name is the mission, basically. I don’t want students to just memorize a formula or pattern-match a problem type well enough to pass a test. I want the concept to actually click — and for them to see how it connects to the next thing, and the thing after that. That’s where the name comes from: insight stems from actually understanding something, not just getting the right answer.
What students get
Concepts explained in a way that’s meant to stick, not just get you through Friday’s quiz. I try to connect what we’re working on to how it’s actually used — which is easier for me than most tutors, since I use math and computer science professionally every day. That’s also part of why I can tutor across such a wide range, from a Grade 8 student struggling with algebra to a university student debugging their first data structures assignment — it’s the same underlying skill of building real understanding, just at different altitudes.
What parents get
Someone who shows up prepared, communicates clearly about how their kid is actually doing, and has real, current experience in the fields their kid might be heading toward — not just a tutoring credential.
Getting started
If you’re curious, you can book a free 20-minute, no-obligation consultation at insightstem.ca. Right now I’m also running a launch promo — 20% off your first session, through the end of October — plus an ongoing referral offer: 20% off when someone you refer books a consultation.
You can also find Insight STEM on Facebook and Instagram.
If you know a student who could use this, I’d really appreciate you passing it along.
